The 25-year-old has been one of the best players for QPR so far this season and is likely to start today’s Premier League clash at Loftus Road.
Austin has scored 14 goals and created 13 chances in 23 league appearances so far this campaign, while having a pass accuracy of 65% and a shot accuracy of 67%.
Former Manchester United and Liverpool striker Owen believes that the former Burnley star will be crucial for QPR if they are to pick up all three points against Arsenal in the London derby.
“Arsenal, despite failing to really sparkle, still managed to get the better of Everton at the weekend and Arsene Wenger’s side can ensure the prospect of Champions League football next term with a win at Loftus Road,” the 35-year-old wrote on Betvictor.com.
“The R’s remain odds-on to go straight back down to the Championship and must sort out their problematic defence if they are to have any serious chance of staying up.
“Charlie Austin has netted 14 of Rangers’ 27 league goals this term and will be crucial to the hosts getting a result; 7/4 to finish the season as the league’s top English goalscorer in what looks a two-horse race with Spurs’ striker Harry Kane (8/15 favourite with BetVictor).”
Austin will indeed be important for QPR and could well score a goal, but given the form that Arsenal are in at the moment, the North London outfit should be considered favourites to win today.
Arsene Wenger’s side have won six of their seven Premier League games and all three of their last meetings with QPR.
France international striker Olivier Giroud has scored seven goals in his last nine league starts, and he could well be on the scoresheet against Rangers today.
