The future of Rafa Benitez's managerial spell at Napoli is uncertain with the Spaniard unwilling to confirm whether he will sign a new contract with the club.
Benitez has been unable to crack Juventus' dominance on the Serie A title, and are currently four points behind second placed Roma.
Football Italia report that he has rejected Napoli's offer of a renewed deal, claiming he is waiting on former club Liverpool instead. The website references Italian newspaper Il Mattino, writing: "The paper believes that the former Inter coach is waiting to see whether a vacancy will open up at his former club, Liverpool."
Benitez may have a long wait on his hands however, as after a difficult start to the season, current Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has the club in superb form, unbeaten in the Premier League in 2015.
The early struggles, and way he has been able to turn it around too bodes future for future longevity the manager at the club, showing he can weather a poor run of form. Rodgers came close to winning the league in only his second season at Liverpool, and all the signs are that the club are looking to build a dynasty under his management.
Bringing Benitez back to replace him seems ludicrous at present, and while a personal ambition on the Spaniard's part surely remains, he will have to be very patient.
Openings at Newcastle United, and potentially West Ham or Manchester City could be potential destinations if the former Liverpool and Chelsea manager does want a Premier League return, they are more realistic options.
Benitez, a former Champions League winning boss at Anfield a decade ago, still has an emotional connection with the club's fans, and the speculative reports stirred some debate among supporters. Here's a look at a few of the comments via Twitter...
Unless we suddenly start losing game after game, it doesn't make any sense to replace BR with Benitez #LFC— Daniel (@IAmDaniel0) March 3, 2015
"@talkSPORT: Stunning report! Benitez rejects Napoli contract as Spaniard dreams of Liverpool return" Don't toy with my heart like that— Bertie (@KingFlanno) March 3, 2015
Rafa Benitez apparently wants to return to Liverpool. Don't see him taking Rodgers spot but wouldn't mind him being our Sporting Director— TK (@EnjoyableShoes) March 3, 2015
Can i just lay a marker down: If Rafa is managing in the city of Liverpool anytime soon, he'll be at Goodison well before Anfield.— #ITKOdie (@ikhilioju) March 3, 2015
