Tech M&A is at a 15-year high following NXT’s $16.1 billion bid for Freescale.

Chip maker NXP Semiconductors NV agreed to buy Freescale Semiconductor Ltd, its smaller Texas-based peer, for US$16.1 billion.

With this announcement, M&A transactions in the technology sector hit US$52.6 billion so far during 2015, 4% more than the value registered during the same period last year (US$50.5 billion), and the highest year-to-date level in the sector since 2000.

The deal is the 4th largest announced M&A transaction so far this year, 2015’s 3rd largest acquisition of a US company, and the largest tech M&A deal so far this year.

19 mega-deals worth US$5 billion or more have been announced so far during 2015, the highest number year-to-date since our records began in the 1970s.
