The director of PSV Eindhoven, Toon Gerbrands, has been speaking about the future of Netherlands international Memphis Depay, confirming that Tottenham Hotspur were interested in the young winger and that he could still move on at the end of the current campaign.
In comments given to NOS and later published by Goal.com, Gerbrands said, “They (Tottenham) were willing to offer £15million. We decided to keep hold of him. But he has the option to leave after this season.”
Depay is one of the hottest properties in world football, with his impressive World Cup campaign a prelude to what has been a wonderful season for PSV.
The 21-year-old has scored 21 goals in 31 appearances for the Dutch side this season, while also providing six assists to date.
His career stats read 43 goals and 27 assists in 115 matches for PSV but this season he has reached another level and if he does ultimately leave it is likely to be for far more than the £15million Tottenham are said to have been prepared to pay.
If Tottenham could sign a player of Depay’s quality it would be an emphatic statement of intent moving into the new season.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side have recently experienced two bouts of cup woe, being eliminated from the Europa League shortly before losing in the League Cup final to Chelsea. But the North London club have plenty of promising young talent in their side that will be even better next season.
Adding Depay to that squad would only be a good thing, so having already indicated their interest, surely Tottenham will make a move if Depay does head for pastures new.
