Manchester United round-up: Rooney on ‘big’ player’s importance; defender on vital match

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Manchester United

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has been speaking to MUTV about the upcoming match against Newcastle United.

The two sides go head-to-head at St James’ Park on Wednesday and the United centre-back knows the importance of a win with the race for a top-four place as tight as ever.

In quotes later published by the club’s official website, Smalling said, “We need to make sure on Wednesday we get that win because six points is crucial these three or four days.”

United are currently fourth in the Premier League table, two points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool and one point behind Arsenal in third.

In other news, Wayne Rooney has been speaking about his United teammate Angel Di Maria in comments published by Setanta.

The Argentine international had a match to forget against Sunderland on Saturday, coming off at half-time having failed to make any significant impact.

United ultimately went on to win the match 2-0 courtesy of a brace from Rooney, but the skipper defended the club’s record signing.

“It was one of those days that every footballer has,” the United skipper said. “I am sure he will be a big player for us between now and the end of the season.”
