Newcastle United midfielder Jonas Gutierrez has commented on the reception he was given by the club’s fans during the game against Aston Villa, as reported by the Shields Gazette.
The Argentine returned to the Newcastle first team squad over the weekend for the first team since he won his battle against testicular cancer.
Unsurprisingly, fans gave him a standing ovation when he ran down the touchline to warm up during the 1-0 win.
“I really appreciated that. The fans were always so good with me - I think they enjoyed that I was here again,” said Gutierrez.
“I’m ready. I’m going to try to do my best when I have my opportunity. I’m going to fight for that.”
The Newcastle star didn’t get off the bench during the 1-0 win, but it’s encouraging to see him fighting to get back into the team.
When he does return, he’ll be vital in terms of the experience and quality he provides down either flank and he’ll be important as the Magpies push for the top eight.
He needs to continue working hard and impressing in training to show why he’s a good option for John Carver over the rest of the season.
His return will give the side a lift and he’s an inspirational figure considering the adversity he’s experienced in the last few months.
Newcastle have a massive game against Manchester United and if Carver feels the midfield needs to be freshened up, Gutierrez could well be coming into the side.
