Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse has commented on being compared with club legends in the Chronicle.
Cisse is rising up through the list of Premier League goalscorers at the club, currently on 34, seven behind the tally Les Ferdinand managed over the course of his career.
“Yes but I don’t have it as a priority. I just have it in my head each week to work in training,” said Cisse.
“It’s good to be up there. But it’s what I work for in the week at the training ground.”
Cisse scored the only goal of the game in the club’s win against Aston Villa, which allowed the Magpies to improve their position on the Premier League table.
He has 11 goals in the league this season and while it may be difficult for him to get past Ferdinand over the rest of this season, there’s no reason he can’t achieve it next season.
In terms of his chances of hunting down the names on the list after Ferdinand (Nobby Solano and Shola Ameobi to name just two), that could rest on whether his current contract (which expires in the summer of 2017) is extended.
If he can continue having the sort of impact he’s had this season, there’s no reason the club won’t put a fresh offer in front of him and no reason why he shouldn’t sign it.
He’s 29-years-old and has plenty of years ahead of him if he can find ways to stay effective, his stock and popularity at the club will only improve.
