Why Jordan Henderson holds the key to Liverpool beating Man City

The England international is back in the Reds reckoning and his personal battle against Yaya Toure will be vital.

Liverpool have received an excellent piece of injury news ahead of their clash with Manchester City today, with key midfielder Jordan Henderson set to face the Premier League champions.

The England international did not feature against Besiktas in midweek and with Lucas Leiva and Steven Gerrard nursing knocks, Henderson will be critical if Brendan Rodgers’ men are to win three points this afternoon.

Although City’s squad is littered with international stars, the undoubted fulcrum to Manuel Pellegrini’s side is Yaya Toure.

The Ivorian’s absence to compete in the African Cup of Nations showed just how vital he is to the Etihad Stadium outfit, with the team’s form dropping without him present.

The African powerhouse has scored seven goals this season and every time he has hit the back of the net City have recorded three points.

Henderson will need to fill Gerrard’s void in the long term with the Reds skipper leaving in the summer and today’s clash against arguably the most complete central midfielder in English football will be an early acid test for the former Sunderland star.

If Henderson can at least hold his own against the power and purpose that Toure provides, the Anfield faithful will be confident of a home win today.
