Manchester United returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory against Sunderland on Saturday, with Wayne Rooney scoring twice. But club-record signing Angel Di Maria had a match to forget and was replaced by Adnan Januzaj at half-time.
The former Real Madrid player started life at Old Trafford in blistering form, but that has dipped alarmingly in recent months and he looked out of sorts against the Black Cats.
United toiled for much of the game but found the breakthrough when John O’Shea fouled Radamel Falcao in the box, allowing Rooney to score from the penalty spot.
That Wes Brown was shown the red card rather than O’Shea was a bizarre sub-plot but Di Maria’s contribution also generated plenty of discussion at the final whistle.
|Passing Accuracy||Key Passes||Shots||On-target Shooting Accuracy||Won Contests||Accurate Crosses||Mins Played|
|Ángel Di María||73%||2||2||0%||0||2||45|
United’s Argentine attacker saw his passing accuracy dip to just 73 per cent while he failed to find the target with either of his goal-scoring attempts.
He also failed to beat his man when it came to dribbling all afternoon and it was no surprise to see him replaced by the young Belgian international for the second half.
After the match we took to Twitter to see what United fans thought of Di Maria's performance and you can read a selection of what we found below:
Di Maria needs to be dropped. How he reacts, who knows, but he's been poor for so long he doesn't deserve to start games.— Phil 'United' (@PhilPassey99) February 28, 2015
Good win made hard by our mentality. Lacking fluency, tempo and too cautious all over the pitch. Di Maria still worryingly poor atm #MUFC— Craig Baisden (@Its_CBaisden) February 28, 2015
So Di Maria is a flop? 8 assists not enough? every player have bad spells and he needs time to adapt and few games doesn't make him flop— _Vignesh_man_utd_ (@_Vignesh07_) February 28, 2015
Di Maria is just having a bad day.— Gitz (@iGitz_) February 28, 2015
But it is definitely time to rest/drop Di Maria and give Mata/ Januzaj a good run of games— Will Ravenscroft (@willravenscroft) February 28, 2015
LVG should give Di Maria a weeklong vacation, he needs to rest, just a great rest to re-energize #MUFC— The Drag7c (@IAMVickq) February 28, 2015
I also think that Falcao is playing better without Di Maria— Jure Rifelj (@ygojur) March 1, 2015
