BBC pundit Gary Lineker took to social networking site Twitter in order to revel in Liverpool’s important victory over Manchester City, praising boss Brendan Rodgers.
Manuel Pellegrini’s City side, in contrast, were under immense pressure in order to get a result and keep check with league leaders Chelsea, who are in action against Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup final.
It was a game which had huge implications at the top of the table and one which the Merseysiders took by the scruff of the neck, edging the Citizens 2-1.
Yet, with early goals from Jordan Henderson and later Edin Dzeko, it looked for a long while that a 1-1 stalemate was on the cards and such a result wouldn’t have been a disaster for either side.
However, Brendan Rodgers’ team pushed for a late winner and it duly arrived 15 minutes from time - Philippe Coutinho scoring a wonderful 20-yard effort which left Joe Hart in the visitors’ net helpless.
The victory moves the Anfield outfit up to fifth spot two points behind Manchester United in fourth, prompting BBC pundit Lineker to label it on Twitter as a 'huge win'.

The Reds are arguably playing the best football of any side in the Premier League currently, but their hopes of a top-four spot are still in the balance with an important month coming up.
Following clashes against Burnley and Swansea City, back-to-back matches against rivals Manchester United and Arsenal await and that double-header could prove their season-defining period.
