Villarreal’s Luciano Vietto has been in superb form this season.

Villarreal star Luciano Vietto, dubbed ‘the next Sergio Aguero’, has been in stunning form this season and would be a welcome addition to Liverpool’s attacking ranks.

According to a report in the Mirror in December, the Reds were eyeing a deal for the 21-year-old during the January transfer window as Luis Suarez’s ideal replacement following Mario Balotelli’s struggles.

A proposed £12 million deal – as reported by the Mirror – ultimately never materialised but Vietto’s form hasn’t deteriorated, if anything it has got better since the turn of the year.

Described as a pacey forward with excellent strength, balance and phenomenal finishing skills, he would certainly add something extra to the Reds’ frontline should Brendan Rodgers renew interest this summer.

The Merseysiders, despite their recent form suggesting otherwise, are still short in the attacking department and Balotelli isn’t a good fit.

Everything that was good about the Reds last season stemmed from their high-pressing and lightening quick attacks, often blowing teams away both at Anfield and on the road.

Italy international Balotelli, however, isn’t that sort of player. He has great strength, good work out the box and is a deadly finisher – but he’s also lazy, often slow and at times appears disinterested.

Vietto, reminiscent of Manchester City’s Aguero, has all the attributes needed to shine in Rodgers’ frontline and has 11 goals and a further two assists in 13 La Liga starts.

The Argentine U20 international was named Spain’s top flight Player of the Month for December, and in recent weeks he almost single-handedly blew Austrian champions Salzburg away in the Europa League with two goals and two assists over the two legs.

The report in the Mirror also concludes that Real Madrid and Inter Milan are also tracking his progress, but the guarantees of further improvement under Rodgers could see Vietto join former teammate Gabriel Paulista – now at Arsenal - in moving to the Premier League.
