Rodolph Austin has proved fans very wrong; why Neil Redfearn deserves credit

The 29-year-old was one of Leeds' star performers against Watford - which is nothing new these days.

When HITC Sport suggested Rodolph Austin could be part of Leeds United's best XI, the comments from many fans suggested this was more of a joke than a serious assessment.

Including in the comments were claims the Jamaican midfielder is nothing more than a League One player - certainly not good enough to make Neil Redfearn's starting XI.

But Redfearn himself disagreed with that. And Austin has proven those who doubted him to the extreme very wrong indeed.

For, against Watford, Austin was one of Leeds' best performers. But that's nothing new for the 29-year-old, of course.

Redfearn can't speak highly enough of the powerhouse midfield man and, on recent form, the Jamaican has shown why.

Austin has been good on the ball lately and tough in the tackle, giving the Yorkshire a steel and balance others can't quite offer. To top it off, he scored a goal-of-the-season contender on Saturday afternoon.

And it's Austin's 49-year-old head coach that deserves the most credit for his progress. Leeds could have sold the midfielder in January but he remained, with Redfearn refusing to bow to calls for Austin to be dropped.

Perseverance has proven key. And Austin certainly doesn't look like a League One player anymore.
