Manchester City suffered what could prove to be a very costly defeat against Liverpool this weekend.
The Blues went behind when Jordan Henderson netted a fine effort but Edin Dzeko’s equaliser suggested City could take something away from Anfield.
That was not to be, with Philippe Coutinho scoring a fine winner, and after the match some of City’s players came in for criticism on social media.
One such player was summer signing Eliaquim Mangala who, along with defensive partner Vincent Kompany, was unable to hold Liverpool’s attacking talent at bay.
The 24-year-old Frenchman was making his 22nd appearance of the season for City, and his 16th in the league, so how did he do?
His passing accuracy of 95 per cent was brilliant, especially considering City were away from home, while he won three interceptions on the day.
|Passing Accuracy||Tackles Won||Duels Lost||Duels Won||Aerials Lost||Aerials Won||Interceptions Won||Mins Played|
However, the City centre-back won just one tackle against Liverpool, while he lost more duels than he was successful with and he lost just as many aerial contests as he won.
Many players take a full season to settle at a new club and Mangala has not exactly been a disaster this season, so in time there is no reason why he cannot become a great defender for the Blues; he certainly has the pedigree having shone for former club FC Porto.
After the match we took to Twitter to see what City fans thought of Mangala's performance against Liverpool and you can read a selection of what we found below, with some mixed responses:
I just can't fathom how Nastastic was so bad that Mangala won the starting spot.— Julian Threet (@jsthreet) March 1, 2015
Mangala will improve methinks. He can't be that bad permanently can he?— kenna (@kennagq) March 1, 2015
Both Kompany and Zabaleta are shadows of the players they used to be. And Mangala is just bad.— Denny Jasar (@dennyjasar) March 1, 2015
Kompany and mangala have been poor tonight!— vivek (@vIvEkV_) March 1, 2015
Mangala has been very poor and has made kompany and others look even worse— Ali (@Alastair_Lewis) March 1, 2015
Mangala is actually not a good defender at all. His reading of the game is awful.— Jacob Basil Jnr II (@bjacobs14) March 1, 2015
@biolakazeem City don't need to do much to their defence tbh. Just one extra CB is okay. Mangala getting better, Demichelis not bad at all— Innöcently Guïlty (@Yemzine) March 1, 2015
Shocking performance from #MCFC today. Think Mangala was solid despite all of that. Hopefully the start of him coming good.— Andrew Whiston (@whiston90) March 1, 2015
Conversely, Mangala had quite a good game— BlueWolf (@BlueWolf1894) March 1, 2015
