Jamie Carragher: Raheem Sterling key for Liverpool v Manchester City

Liverpool and Manchester City will face each other at Anfield in the Premier League today.

Jamie Carragher has written on Skysports.com that Raheem Sterling will be key for Liverpool against Manchester City today.

Merseyside outfit Liverpool will be looking to bounce back from Thursday’s Europa League disappointment with victory over defending English champions City at Anfield in the Premier League.

A number of top players will be on show today, and one of them is Sterling. The 20-year-old is one of the best young players in Europe, and the Liverpool fans will want him to turn on the style.

Sterling, who is a winger by trade, has been deployed as a centre-forward in some games recently, but he has still performed brilliantly.

The England international has scored six goals and created 54 chances in 24 Premier League appearances so far this campaign, while having a pass accuracy of 81% and winning 54% of the duels.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher believes that Sterling will be a big player for the Reds against City today.

“City have got some of the best players in the world in the likes of Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure,” the 37-year-old wrote on Skysports.com. “The impact Toure, back from suspension, can have on these types of games is huge.

“But I look at the way Liverpool played in their 3-2 win over City last April - the match that was billed as a title decider but turned out not to be.

“Rodgers played Raheem Sterling off the front in a diamond formation and he caused all sorts of problems.

"Liverpool play slightly differently now with a back three but - especially if City play 4-4-2 again - Sterling could be the key.”

Sterling’s pace and dribbling skills will be hugely important for Liverpool today, as will his runs off ball.

The youngster is likely to start the encounter behind centre-forward Daniel Sturridge slightly on the right, and he is going to be crucial in the Reds creating chances and asking questions of the City defence.

Cheered by a strong home crowd, Sterling will be expected to step up for Liverpool today.
