Arsenal tried to sign Juventus’ Daniele Rugani in January - Tuttosport

The Italy under-21 centre-half is impressing on loan at Empoli, with the Gunners reportedly trying to sign him in the window.

Arsenal landed Villarreal defender Gabriel Paulista in the January transfer window to provide much needed strength in depth at the heart of the side’s defence.

However, according to Tuttosport, the Gunners made a move for another centre-half before the window closed.

The Italian newspaper claim that the Emirates Stadium outfit approached Juventus with a €3 million offer for Daniele Rugani in January.

This was rejected by Bianconeri director Giuseppe Marotta, the report states.

The Italy under-21 defender has been starring for Empoli this season, with the Italian champions owning half of the player’s rights.

However, it appears that Rugani could well be in the Turin giants’ plans for the immediate future, as Juventus bought Empoli’s half of his ownership towards the end of the transfer window.

Max Allegri’s side has Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci at the heart of its defence, but it appears that Rugani could well be a back-up option and potential future successor to the experienced Italy internationals.

Arsenal have been over-reliant on Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny for the last couple of seasons, while Gabriel could well be in line for a Premier League debut for the Gunners against Everton today.
