The Real Madrid midfielder is out of contract in the summer.

The future of Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira has now become a long running soap opera. The German World Cup winner has had a torrid time recently with a serious knee injury and he has struggled for form at Real Madrid when he has been fit this season.

It is well known that the German's contract expires in the summer, making him one of the most eligible bachelors on the free agent market.

In the Premier League, that has seen Arsenal constantly linked with his signature. In the latest such link, The Guardian reported that Arsenal were in 'hot pursuit' of the player.

With Real Madrid recently signing Lucas Silva from Cruzeiro, Khedira's future at the club certainly looks bleak. Now he has given Arsenal fans renewed hope of his pending arrival. The combative midfielder, who is good friends with Gunners star Mesut Ozil, looks set to be on his way.

This week has seen links with another Bundesliga side come to the fore. He has been linked with a move to Schalke 04 and their manager, former Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo, has admitted he could make a move for the player.

He told the local press in Germany earlier this week, as reported by ESPN:

"Khedira? We all know he's a great player. If he wants to come, the door is open. He's a world-class player."

The race for Khedira's signature looks set to rumble on for the foreseeable future. Arsenal could certainly do with him, as was evident as Francis Coquelin was completely outclassed by Joao Moutinho of Monaco in midweek. Time will have to tell where exactly he ends up plying his trade.
