The summer signing from Athletic Bilbao has been talking about where he can play on the pitch for Manchester United.
The 25-year-old Spanish international has made 20 appearances for United this season, impressing with his goal-scoring ability and eye for a key pass. So what is his best position?
“I am going to tell you about this topic but I must say that I just want to play,” he told the Telegraph.
“Of course, sometimes you prefer one position than another but now I am not in the best moment to decide my best position. I am going to play when and where the manager wants.
“I played number 10 in Athletic last season but I can also play right side, left side.”
Explaining that he can also play as a number eight, Herrera made it clear that the most important thing for him is to be on the pitch, influencing the game.
It is refreshing to see him doing just that after he spent a long period of time out of the side, so long in fact that some reports, including one from the Express, claimed he could be heading out of United having only just arrived.
Of course those reports had to be taken with a pinch of salt, and Herrera’s recent resurgence suggests he has a very bright future at Old Trafford. But with manager Louis van Gaal almost certainly signing new midfielders in the summer, Herrera’s future on the pitch will be an interesting one.
His versatility can only be a good thing, both for him and for United, and as long as he keeps scoring goals the clamour for his inclusion will be loud and constant…and with good reason.
