Ex-Arsenal star John Hartson’s advice to Tottenham Hotspur ahead of Chelsea showdown

Former Arsenal and Celtic striker John Hartson says that Tottenham Hotspur need to defend well against Chelsea to win Sunday’s League Cup final.

John Hartson has told BT Sport that Tottenham Hotspur need to be defensively strong against Chelsea to win Sunday’s League Cup final at London’s Wembley Stadium.

The former Arsenal and Celtic striker made the comments following Spurs’ 2-0 defeat to Fiorentina in the second leg of the Europa League round-of-32 tie in Italy on Thursday.

Both the goals that Tottenham conceded were due to mistakes from individual players, as the North London outfit paid the price by getting knocked out of the competition.

Hartson, who also played for Scottish giants Celtic, has advised Mauricio Pochettino’s side to defend well against Premier League leaders Chelsea.

“They (Spurs) certainly need to defend better than what they did tonight, and it will be a cracker and I’m looking forward to it,” the 39-year-old former Wales international told BT Sport.

Defence key to winning League Cup final?

Tottenham were disappointing defensively against Fiorentina in Florence, and they simply cannot repeat the same mistakes against Chelsea, who are a better team than the Serie A outfit.

With the likes of Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard in full flow, it will not be easy for the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Federico Fazio.

Although Spurs defeated Chelsea at White Hart Lane in the Premier League on New Year’s Day, they conceded three goals and actually went behind.

To win on Sunday, Tottenham need to make it tight in midfield and make sure that the defenders do not leave space behind.

It could eventually come down to individual brilliance from the Chelsea players, but as a team Spurs certainly need to defend much better than they did against Fiorentina.
