Tottenham Hotspur struggled to get into their game against Fiorentina last night.
Tottenham Hotspur went into the game against Fiorentina last night confident that they would come out at the other end with a win.
What the travelling Spurs faithful saw was a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Serie A side, which is hardly ideal preparation for the side ahead of the League Cup final this weekend.
Credit has to go to manager Mauricio Pochettino for resisting the urge to rest everyone ahead of the game against Chelsea, with a few first choice players turning out last night.
Erik Lamela arguably falls into that category, but he failed to produce anything close to one of his best performances for the club.
Lamela is an extremely talented attacking player, but it’s debatable whether he has the defensive discipline to be able to play in a difficult European game away from home.
He could be one of the players that Pochettino is toying with starting this weekend and he struggled to show much in his 90 minutes, which will convince the boss that he has to play.
Pochettino now faces a challenge over the next couple of days in terms of lifting the players, as heads dropped as it became evident that Tottenham weren’t going to make it through to the next round.
Lamela has to do everything he can in training to show why he should start this weekend.
It’s a risk because he doesn’t appear to be in great form and played the full 90 last night, which means he’s going to be strained physically.
Tottenham need every single player to have a spring in their step and to be on the pulse from the first whistle this weekend, if the side is to have any chance of repeating the impressive 5-3 win they achieved over Chelsea earlier this season.
Here’s what Tottenham fans on Twitter had to say about Lamela’s performance.
@BIackGooner Lamela is terrible but time is on his side, unlike Soldado. Think they'll both leave Spurs this summer or the next anyway.— Hiten. (@HitenPatel13) February 26, 2015
Lamela and Soldado are the worst buys spurs have ever bought what do they actually bring to the team one simple answer nothing!!!!— Robert Shorter (@Shorter1956) February 26, 2015
Lamela is every stereotype of the "old" Spurs that MP has worked hard to eradicate - soft, no substance or end product. So why persist?— Spurs Fan (@Tottenham_N17) February 26, 2015
Lennon > Lamela— Amit (@Amit_Spurs) February 26, 2015
Spurs could sell back Lamela Paulinho and Soldado for less than half and still buy 4 players better than them #SpursAtWembley— Sean (@seann_b) February 26, 2015
@Spurs_Daily if you're talking bout waste of money you gotta add lamela too....1 rabona in 2 seasons just isn't a good return on investment— ray hayes (@rayofsunshine74) February 26, 2015
Spurs's wingers are atrocious we need someone from the academy, like Liverpool did with Ibe. Lamela+Chadli are so lazy— Sam Jones (@samdwij) February 26, 2015
