It may not be a thought echoed by all Tottenham Hotspur fans, but of all the players likely to be on show for Sunday’s Capital One Cup final against Chelsea, Christian Eriksen is the Spurs player with the most to prove.
In the build-up all the talk has been about Harry Kane, whose 24 goals this season have proved categorically that he is a top-class forward who could lead the line for both club and country for the next decade.
But as Kane has continued to blossom, Eriksen has suffered a slight dip in form, failing to score or assist in any of his last three Premier League appearances.
When you consider his last outing against Chelsea, the Danish international is also likely to want to put in a better individual performance this time round.
Tottenham’s 5-3 win against Jose Mourinho’s side earlier in the campaign was a huge statement of intent from Mauricio Pochettino’s men. That they did it without a single goal or assist from Eriksen also told a story.
Tottenham are not a one-man team, even if Kane is currently netting for fun. They have plenty of players who can excel and that was demonstrated to great effect in their last game against Sunday’s opponents.
Along with Kane, Danny Rose, Nacer Chadli and Andros Townsend all impressed while Jan Vertonghen, Kyle Walker and Nabil Bentaleb all put in stellar shifts.
But Eriksen was below par that day, and while it did not matter then, how he plays on Sunday could be the difference between success and failure.
