Inter Milan booked their place in the last 16 of the Europa League with victory over Celtic in the round of 32.
The Italian giants drew the first leg of the tie 3-3 at Celtic Park in Glasgow last week and edged past the Scottish Premiership giants 1-0 at the San Siro in Milan in the second leg on Thursday.
Both the games were hugely entertaining and very competitive. In the first leg, Celtic came from two goals down to hold Inter, while in the second leg the Bhoys battled fiercely with 10 men for most of the match.
In the end, the better team won. Inter have not done great in terms of results since Roberto Mancini took charge in November, and progress in the Europa League is massive for the Serie A outfit.
Inter’s chances of finishing in the top three of Serie A this season are slim, which means that they need to win the Europa League to qualify for the 2015-16 Champions League.
Mancini was understandably delighted with the win and took to social networking site Twitter to revel in it.
The former Manchester City manager wrote: “Mission accomplished! Qualification was good, but we still have a lot of work to do. Thanks to the fans for their support.”
Lukas Podolski did not feature for Inter against Celtic, but he was still delighted with the Nerazzurri’s triumph over the Bhoys.
The Germany international forward joined the Milan giants in the January transfer window on loan from Arsenal for the rest of the season.
The 29-year-old, who was left out of Inter’s Europa League squad, posted the following simple message on Twitter after Thursday’s win against Celtic.
