Report: Jack Wilshere injury blow for Arsenal worse than claimed, star to miss Manchester United game

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere could miss the FA Cup game with Manchester United.

Jack Wilshere's latest ankle setback could be even worse than first thought.

Originally Wilshere missed the training session before the Champions League first leg with Monaco, which Arsene Wenger was reported by The Mail to have played down as simply a precaution.

Wilshere has been out of action since last year, and on Friday the manager told Arsenal.com the midfielder had undergone minor surgery which will lead to him being out for a 'few days'.

Wenger's optimism may once again be misplaced however, with The Times reporting the England international is a major doubt for the FA Cup clash at Old Trafford.

The paper writes: "Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, said the injury-blighted 23-year-old would be out for only a short time but it is unlikely the midfielder will be fit to feature in the FA Cup sixth-round tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford a week on Monday. He will miss Sunday’s match against Everton in the Barclays Premier League."

The 3-1 loss to Monaco emphasised Arsenal's need for fresh energy in their midfield, and Wilshere would have been ideal to play against Manchester Untied, who he was originally injured against.

Arsenal are attempting to defend the trophy against Louis van Gaal's side, who they are also in competition against for league positions, in next Monday's quarter-final.
