Mesut Ozil lets his Arsenal teammate down

Mesut Ozil 3

Serge Gnabry talked Mesut Ozil up, but he didn't deliver.

They say you should never meet your idols, for you will only be disappointed. So you can only imagine how Serge Gnabry feels right now.

The teenage winger gave an interview to less than 24 hours before kick-off against Monaco explaining how he idolised Mesut Ozil ever since he was a youngster.

Now part of the same team, Gnabry talked Ozil up, claiming he is still among the best players in his position, and believed this was the time for him to really step up.

He said: "He’s very special. We’ve all seen what he’ve capable of. When he was at Madrid, in my eyes, he was one of the best playmakers in the world and still is up to now.

"He’s back on the pitch and everybody loves to be back out there playing and competing on the pitch. I think that gives him a big boost to his potential he has already. Now it’s time for him to show it."

Except he didn't. Against Monaco the stage was set for him, and he did not deliver.

The best players in the world need to find a way to perform in a home fixture in a Champions League knockout first leg against Monaco. Ozil has no fitness worries to cite as he could after his poor display against Bayern last season.

Some blame can of course be attributed to his manager Arsene Wenger for failing to get the best out of him, but Ozil needs to look in the mirror at his performance.

His display would not be so notable had it not been for his reputation, and comments like those from Gnabry talking him up as the world's best. His performance did not meet expectations, and we wonder how many of Arsenal's players are wondering when he will step up and deliver in a big game like he needs to.
