Southampton's Toby Alderweireld is close to making a return.

Southampton defender Toby Alderweireld has posted an encouraging message on Twitter today, confirming that he is edging closer to fitness.

Alderweireld has been out with a hamstring problem which he picked up at the start of January, but he appears to be close to making a comeback.

The Belgium international made his return to training on Friday and judging by his comment on Twitter, it felt good to be playing with his teammates again.

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman confirmed to the Daily Echo on Thursday that Alderweireld would miss the Saints' match against West Bromwich Albion this weekend.

However, the Atletico Madrid loanee appears set to be in their squad against Crystal Palace on Tuesday and that will please everyone connected with the South Coast club.

Alderweireld has been one of Southampton's most important players this campaign and he brings a sturdiness to their defence.

Comfortable in possession and robust without it, the 25-year-old has had a hugely impressive first season in English football and he will be aiming to cap it off in style by helping the Saints claim a Champions League spot when he does return.
