Having been out for much of the season because of thigh and calf injuries, the sight of Sturridge in a Liverpool shirt and getting game time is a welcome one for Reds fans, but he seemed to struggle last night, and failed to put away a big opportunity that could have seen them secure their passage to the next round, rather than exit the competition.
It will feel as though it's one of 'what could have been' nights for both Sturridge and Liverpool, but he did have games like this last season and managed to bounce back by finding the net regularly soon after. Even though he is still trying to regain that kind of fitness, Sunday lunchtime's game against Manchester City would be the perfect time for him to start.
Sturridge has scored two goals since his return to the side, but has yet to regain that sharpness that made him such a threat last season, seeing him score 24 goals in all competitions. As for his performance last night, Liverpool fans didn't seem too impressed by his contribution.
Here is what a selection of them had to say:
Don't want to blame him for our loss but Sturridge missed key chances that would of given us that crucial goal to take us through.— EmreLad (@LFCBanterKing) February 27, 2015
Both Sturridge and Sterling need to put in a lot more of effort on Sunday compared to what they did yesterday if we want to win against City— Alex Fagerholm (@AlexLFC90) February 27, 2015
Anyone else think sturridge is gone lazy doesn't press high up, Mario done more pressing last night I dunno just my opinion— Steven Walsh (@guffy82) February 27, 2015
Main worries are Sturridge is reverting to 'Chelsea Sturridge' and trying far too hard to score, and that Sterling believes his own hype.— Peter Benson (@PeteBeno) February 27, 2015
