The Spanish side are through to the next stage of the Europa League following their 3-1 victory over Red Bull Salzburg last night.
Villarreal booked their place in the next round of the Europa League last night with a 3-1 away win in Austria against Red Bull Salzburg.
Luciano Vietto, who was being heavily linked with a switch to Liverpool in the January transfer window, and former Tottenham forward Giovani Dos Santos combined mercurially to fire the Spanish side into the next stage.
After falling a goal behind, Argentine striker Vietto equalised in the 33rd minute, with Dos Santos providing the assist.
The pair combined again in the 76th minute to give Marcelino’s team the lead as the South American struck again, with the Mexican setting the goal up.
The roles were reversed three minutes later, with Dos Santos getting his name on the scoresheet and Vietto turning provider to wrap up a 5-2 aggregate victory.
Dos Santos never fully integrated in North London and was not given a consistent run of games in the side’s starting XI to show what he was fully capable of.
Vietto has been a revelation this term after signing for Villarreal in the summer from Racing Club, with Liverpool’s reported interest understandable on this showing.
