Former Arsenal star Ray Parlour told talkSPORT yesterday that he feels Derby are benefiting from Steve McClaren’s loyalty to the club.
McClaren was linked with a move to Newcastle United by the Daily Mail, before the Magpies announced that John Carver would be staying on until the end of the season.
“Steve McClaren has done a brilliant job. He’s decided to stick with Derby and give them that chance and they look like they’re going very well at the moment,” said the ex-Gunner.
Newcastle is a massive club and a massive job, but it wasn’t a role which was enough for McClaren to turn his focus away from the Championship club.
Derby have worked extremely hard over the last few weeks to get themselves into a position where they have a lead at the top of the second-tier table.
It’s not a big lead, just two points, but McClaren deserves praise for keeping the players focused at a time when they could have been worrying about their own futures.
McClaren refused to get distracted by the links suggesting he could leave the club and also deserves praise for the signings he made during the winter transfer window.
Darren Bent, Tom Ince and Jesse Lingard all arrived on loan, which allowed the Rams to retain their attacking integrity.
The club look a great bet for promotion into the Premier League, which creates the question every Derby fan will ask for the rest of the season; why on earth would McClaren want to leave?
