Will Koeman take big risk at Southampton because of this stat?

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman is reportedly considering a big risk at the club because of a worrying statistic.

There is a stat, which the Southern Daily Echo claims could tempt Southampton boss Ronald Koeman to bring Shane Long back into his side as quickly as possible.

That stat is the one goal Southampton have scored from 65 attempts in their last four matches.

Long has been in the treatment room at the club with a rib injury, which is one of the more delicate problems for any player to nurse.

The temptation is to get him back into the side as quickly as possible but there are two possible problems if that’s the mentality that Koeman has.

Firstly, he needs to be careful that he doesn’t make the rib problem worse by bringing Long back prematurely.

Secondly, he’ll be lacking match sharpness and fitness.

The better approach seems to be bringing him off of the subs bench when the Saints are ahead and comfortable in games and helping him back to a point where he’s ready to start.

Southampton have slipped out of the top four and the manager and his players are under pressure. They need to be careful over how they react.
