Two goals and two assists in his first three matches spoke of a player who was keen on showing just what £59.7million can buy you nowadays. But the Argentine’s form soon took a slump, and he has not scored in his last 13 league appearances.
In comparison, Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling has started to rediscover his scoring form at a vital time, netting twice in his last three league games and looking a consistent threat for the Reds. So how do the two players compare in the English top flight this season?
Sterling has twice as many goals as United's star signing, while he also has more shots in the league to date, a considerably better on-target shooting accuracy and a slightly better passing accuracy.
|Goals||Goal Assists||Shots||On-target Shooting Accuracy||Key Passes||Dribbles||Passing Accuracy||Appearances|
|Ángel Di María||3||8||54||30%||42||86||79%||18|
The Liverpool winger has also played more key passes - 54 compared with Di Maria's 42 - and he has gone on 138 dribbles, outshining a player who was brought to United to do just that on a regular basis.
Di Maria may well take a full season at Old Trafford to completely settle, and if he plays to his full potential when the new campaign kicks off he could still go down as a true United great. But the simple fact is for now Sterling is overshadowing him, and that is something Liverpool fans will love and United supporters will struggle to take.
