The Barcelona and Argentina forward has now missed five of his last ten penalties after seeing a spot-kick saved against Manchester City.
Lionel Messi has started 2015 in blistering form, with the Argentine attacker ripping apart opposition defences in Spain during an excellent winning run for Barcelona.
The four-times Ballon d’Or winner played a considerable role in the Catalan side’s 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League last night in England, with the La Liga side outclassing the Etihad Stadium hosts.
However, despite two away goals and victory in the first leg of the tie, Barcelona’s advantage could and should have been more substantial than Luis Suarez’s brace.
Messi had the opportunity to score from the spot-kick to further Barca’s advantage but saw his effort saved by Joe Hart.
Interestingly, the botched penalty attempt now means that Messi has missed five of his last ten spot-kicks for club and country – staggering given the Argentine’s technique and superlative accuracy in all other parts of his game.
That said, despite the disappointment of missing from 12 yards, Messi has contributed an incredible 23 goals and assists since the turn of the year and looked at his menacing best against City last night.
