Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing a player from Borussia Dortmund.
The paper claims the Magpies have made signing a striker a priority for the summer and with Dortmund struggling in the Bundesliga, currently 12th, one or two players may be tempted into exits.
If Newcastle can get Dortmund talking, then the 25-year-old has a number of attributes which would make him perfectly suited to the club.
His pace is breath taking and suggests that he could play one of two roles in Newcastle’s attack; on the shoulder or down either side of the attack.
If he played on the shoulder of the opposition defence, Newcastle’s backline would be able to drop deeper to take advantage of that pace.
He’s in good form, which would make him difficult to sign. However, nine goals in 19 league starts this season for a side, which has been struggling is a strike rate that many strikers at clubs all over the Premier League would die for.
He’s also an extremely tall striker, which means Newcastle could play direct football and rely on him holding the ball up and it also makes him an obvious threat from set pieces.
The main problem for Newcastle is that his contract, according to transfermarkt, doesn’t expire until the summer of 2018.
That would make him expensive considering Dortmund haven’t given any indication that they want to sell him, which puts Newcastle in a more difficult position.
There is an argument to suggest that John Carver, or whoever replaces him, should prioritise improving the defence this summer, but if a player like Aubameyang becomes a realistic target, Newcastle would be naïve to pass up the chance of getting him.
