Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show for talkSPORT that he doesn’t think Arsene Wenger will look to sign another shot stopper this summer.
Arsenal have two top quality goalkeepers in the form of Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina and Lehmann feels that covers the position in relation to the first team squad, but he has suggested whether they are good enough to be the backbone of a successful side.
“I was there on Monday (the Arsenal training ground) but he didn’t tell me - I doubt he is looking because he has got great two goalkeepers right now,” said the German.
“If you want to win something, I’d question right now if they’re all happy with the situation because you need to have a very stable and great goalkeeper.”
Ospina and Szczesny have been rotated frequently this season alongside younger shot stopper Emiliano Martinez.
That suggests that Wenger may harbour a little doubt over who should be his main number one at the club and who he should trust in the high pressure situations over the rest of the campaign.
The goalkeeper is one of the most important players in any team and not just because they produce the world class saves that keep opponents at bay.
They are important in terms of organising the side because they can see things unfolding in front of them and adjust the defence and midfield accordingly.
For Arsenal to seriously challenge for the Premier League title looking ahead to next season, a world class goalkeeper like Petr Cech, who is number two at Chelsea, wouldn’t do the club any harm.
However, whether Wenger will risk upsetting two top class goalkeepers to bring in someone who is world class between the posts is doubtful.
