Liverpool media round-up, duo doubtful for Besiktas, Carragher on top four chances

A selection of the latest stories involving Liverpool Football Club in the media this Wednesday morning.

Liverpool are sweating on the fitness of defender Mamadou Sakho ahead of the second leg of their Europa League against Besiktas according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Frenchman, who has been in terrific form for the Reds lately, missed the 2-0 win at Southampton on Sunday because of a hip injury. The likely option to start for the Reds tomorrow evening should Sakho miss out would be Dejan Lovren, who started on Sunday.

The Echo also suggests that Steven Gerrard will miss out as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury he picked up earlier in the month during Liverpool's win over Tottenham at Anfield.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has backed the side to finish in the top four after their recent run of form in the Premier League has seen them close the gap to two points on fourth-place Manchester United, with Arsenal a further point ahead in third place.

It looked as though the Reds wouldn't be in the fight for the top four after a poor start to the season, but Carragher thinks Liverpool's momentum could aid them to finish in the top four places.

He told TalkSport: “I have said for the last few weeks I didn’t think Liverpool would get into the top four because of their FA Cup and European commitments and I felt Manchester United would,”

“The fact that they’ve dropped points can happen, they’ve been on a great run, but Liverpool are coming into great form and I think a lot will be decided in the game [between the two sides] at Anfield and I’d have to fancy Liverpool to win that game with the form both teams are in.

“Whether the accumulation of games will be a factor for Liverpool, who knows? But that game at Anfield will have a massive bearing on it and I’d have to fancy Liverpool at the moment.”
