How Jason Pearce's Wigan form compares with Sol Bamba at Leeds

Elland Road

Comparing the new Wigan Athletic centre-back with the player who replaced him at Leeds United.

At the end of January, Leeds United captain Jason Pearce swapped Elland Road for Wigan Athletic’s DW Stadium, a week after Sol Bamba had arrived in Yorkshire on loan from Italian side Palermo.

Pearce had been a regular at Leeds for much of the season, but the 27-year-old dropped down the pecking order in his final months at the club, having to make do with appearances for the team’s under-21s while Liam Cooper and Giuseppe Bellusci played ahead of him.

Since his move, Pearce has made three appearances for Wigan, while Bamba has turned out six times for Leeds, and while the Ivorian’s impact at Elland Road is no secret, here we take a closer look at how his performances for his new club compare with Pearce’s for the Latics.

Bamba's impact is made even clearer when you consider how Pearce has started life at Wigan.

The Leeds defender averages more blocks, more tackles, more ground clearances and more headed clearances per appearance. He also wins more duels and more than twice as many interceptions.

Jason Pearce 1 0.33 5.33 3.67 2 5.67 3.67 65% 270

Bamba's passing accuracy is also streets ahead of Pearce's since the latter's move, with the new Leeds centre-back successful with 79 per cent of his passes and the new Wigan man finding a teammate with only 65 per cent of his efforts.

Bamba's arrival at Leeds has completely transformed their back-line. He is the player they have been crying out for, a defender who, in time, could go down as one of their very best...provided of course they can sign him permanently.
