When Diego Costa arrived at Chelsea from Atletico Madrid, he hit the ground running like few would have expected.
The Brazilian-born Spanish international was simply sensational in his early months as a Chelsea player, while in another part of London, Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane was building up to a fine spell of his own.
In the opening matches of the campaign, Kane had to make do with brief appearances from the bench in the league, forced to fill his boots in the Europa League.
But there came a point when Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino could ignore him no longer, and soon after he went on a run that has seen him net 12 times in his last 11 league games.
The table above only takes into consideration the Chelsea and Tottenham stars’ Premier League outings this season, but how do the two players compare in the top flight?
Costa currently has three more league goals than his Spurs counterpart (17 compared with 14), but Kane is ahead in terms assists and shots on goal while he has been dispossessed considerably less than the Spanish international.
That said, the Chelsea player has a better on-target shooting accuracy – an impressive 54 per cent compared with Kane’s 43 per cent. Costa also trumps the Tottenham youngster in terms of key passes and passing accuracy.
Given the difference in ages – Kane is 21 and Costa is 26 – the one thing that is clear is that if the Tottenham player continues on his current trajectory, he could well become every bit as effective as Costa.
In short, he could become the bona fide superstar striker Spurs fans have been crying out for.
