At first glance, it looked like a masterstroke, parting company with a fan favourite but one who rarely set the scoring charts alight and replacing him with one of the best strikers in world football.
But things have not quite gone according to plan. Welbeck was always going to impress at Arsenal. His hard work and ability to play in a number of positions were ideal for Arsene Wenger’s side. But few would have believed Falcao would struggle as he has at Old Trafford.
It is not as if he has not had chances; after all, the Colombian international has played 19 matches this season, 16 of which have been in the Premier League. But a return of just four goals has been disappointing.
That is the same amount of goals Welbeck has managed in the league for Arsenal, but how do the duo compare in a number of other key areas?
The United loanee has twice as many assists as Welbeck and - unsurprisingly - the former has a better on-target shooting accuracy, although the Arsenal player has had 48 shots compared with Falcao's 29.
|Goals||Goal Assists||Shots||On-target Shooting Accuracy||Key Passes||Dribbles||Interceptions Won||Duels Won|
Welbeck has played more than double the amount of key passes than United's striker has managed in the league, while he also considerably out-performs Falcao in terms of dribbles, interceptions won and duels won.
While it could be argued that some of those things are not the United man's job, they are not technically the Arsenal star's job either, he simply does them because that is the type of player he is.
How United could do with Welbeck's energy now, as they struggle to break down opponents and look lackadaisical where before they attacked at will.
