50 duels won; 34 dribbles: Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho flourishing in 2015

A closer look at Philippe Coutinho's league performances since the turn of the year.

Since the turn of the year, it is fair to say Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho has upped his game in impressive fashion.

The 22-year-old Brazilian has always been a talented player, but in recent weeks he has been considerably more effective, scoring wonderful goals against Southampton in the league and Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup.

The analysis below only takes into account Coutinho’s Premier League performances, but a quick look shows just how much more confident he has got in his own ability, and how that is paying off for Brendan Rodgers’ much-improved side.

Coutinho's goals and assists do not tell the whole story. His desire to improve is perhaps most clearly demonstrated in the number of shots he has had in just seven league games since the start of January.

The Liverpool play-maker has already had 16 shots, as he seeks to add more goals to his game, and with an on-target accuracy of 44 per cent expect that tally to increase at a swift rate between now and May.

Then there are the other roles he plays, as a creator of chaos among the opposition by dribbling at them - 34 times and counting in the league in 2015 - and as more of a battler, winning an extremely impressive 50 duels and showing he is more than just a flashy Brazilian, he can also get stuck in when required.

Wherever Liverpool finish this season, much of that will be down to how well or otherwise Coutinho plays.

For now he is shining and that can only bode well for Brendan Rodgers, for Liverpool's supporters and for the player himself.
