The Portugal international scored a spectacular goal for his side last night, but they still lost 2-1 to Akhisar Belediyespor.
Fenebahce’s title challenge suffered a blow last night as the Turkish powerhouses slumped to a 2-1 home defeat to modest side Akhisar Belediyespor.
Despite the defeat, Raul Meireles netted a long-range effort for the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium team on 41 minutes to equalise for the hosts.
As can seen below, the former Liverpool midfielder latched onto a bouncing ball at the edge of the opposition penalty box and smashed it home, giving goalkeeper Oguz Daglaroglu no chance.
Meireles now has two goals in 14 starts for the Turkish side this season and will play a key role in Fenerbahce’s efforts to retain their Super Lig title this term.
The Portuguese midfielder spent two seasons in England with Liverpool and Chelsea, with his time at Anfield the most notable.
He scored five goals in 32 Premier League games for the Merseysiders but was sold to Chelsea, where he struggled to maintain a starting place in the West London side.
