Newcastle United hero Jonas Gutierrez thanks Sunderland fans

Newcastle United's Jonas Gutierrez has thanks Sunderland fans for their support in his battle back from cancer.

Newcastle United midfielder Jonas Gutierrez has thanked fans of the club's bitter rivals Sunderland for their support.

The Argentine has said, via Twitter, that he appreciates the way fans were able to set aside rivalries and be positive in wishing him the best in his battle against testicular cancer.

Gutierrez, 31, has completed his treatment and is even back in training with Newcastle, and told SkySports yesterday that he is available for first team selection.

He thanked Newcastle fans in the interview, and made a point via social media of praising the way the football community came together.

Gutierrez is 31-years-old and his contract at Newcastle expires at the end of this current season. There are 12 Premier League games left between now and then, and the chance to see him in a black and white shirt even one more time is reason to give fans a brief moment to cheer.

It may seem like Newcastle are just playing the season out under John Carver until a permanent boss is appointed in the summer, and giving Gutierrez at least one run out is surely a must.
