Both Messi and Aguero will have to be at the top of their game if they intend to secure the victory for their respective teams, and City captain Vincent Kompany has told Marca that Messi’s consistency is the reason that he will always be better than Aguero.
Aguero has scored an incredible 22 goals in 26 games for City this term, and almost single-handedly helped them progress to this stage of the Champions League with his performance against Bayern Munich in the group stage. However, there is one criticism to his game that has dogged much of his professional career - inconsistency.
Despite scoring a wealth of goals, the 26-year-old frequently does so in pairs or hat-tricks, and can go on long runs of games without scoring. For a player in a team fighting for domestic and European success, Aguero certainly lacks the consistency of a top class striker, and, prior to scoring twice against Stoke City, he went six games without registering a goal.
There is no doubting that on his day Aguero is one of the best players in the Premier League, and one of the best strikers in world football, but it is this inconsistency that means he cannot match the level of Messi, according to Vincent Kompany.
Speaking to Marca, the Belgian defender admitted that Aguero is as good as Luis Suarez and Neymar, but cannot match the third part of Barcelona’s attacking ‘trident’ - Messi.
“He is at the same level as two of them [Suarez and Neymar],” Kompany said. “The incredible thing about Leo is his consistency. One can be Messi for a day, but he is Messi every day, every game: two, three goals!
“If Kun [Aguero] has his day, he is an amazing player, and you do not see another like it. But it's the consistency that makes Messi be Messi.”
