Emre Can’s performance for Liverpool against Southampton in the Premier League made a positive impression on former Tottenham Hotspur forward Garth Crooks.

Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Garth Crooks has been singing the praises of Liverpool midfielder Emre Can on BBC Sport.

The 21-year-old has established himself as one of the key players for the Merseyside outfit this season and has shown his versatility by playing in defence.

Signed from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2014, Can has gradually established himself as one of the best young players in the Premier League.

On Sunday, the Germany Under-21 international was once again superb for Liverpool, giving an accomplished display in defence against Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium in the Premier League, as shown in the Opta Stats table below.

Crooks was impressed with what he saw of Can in Liverpool’s 2-0 win away from home and included him in his ‘Premier League Team of the Week’ for BBC Sport.

“All credit to Brendan Rodgers for creating a system that doesn't just suit his players but brings the best out of them,” explained the 56-year-old.

“Emre Can has fitted into the new system as well as anyone and he looked impregnable at times against a persistent Southampton.”

Can has been truly brilliant for Liverpool in recent weeks, and one has to admire him for showing his versatility by playing in defence.

Liverpool are very much in the running for a top-four finish in the Premier League this season and are also aiming to win the Europa League.

For those ambitions to be fulfilled, Can will have to continue playing the way he is doing right now.
