Chelsea media round-up: Blues reportedly close on Mauro Icardi

Stamford Bridge

A round up of news stories this morning related to Chelsea.

The Metro is reporting that Chelsea are on track to complete a £22 million deal for Mauro Icardi.

The paper claims the Blues are in pole position to do a deal for the Inter Milan star despite him recently holding contract talks with the Italian club.

The paper claims the club have been scouting the promising young striker for the last year-and-a-half.

ESPN has reported that Chelsea will appeal the red card shown to midfielder Nemanja Matic during the game against Burnley last weekend.

Matic was sent off after he retaliated against a challenge from Ashley Barnes, which could have left him with a broken leg.

Matic is set to miss the League Cup final against Tottenham if his red card is upheld.

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has been quoted by the Sport Review claiming the Blues can cope without the Serbian.

The Belgian feels the Blues have enough to cope without Matic and has called on his teammates to step up and do their jobs.

“It’s a pity he can’t play in the final, but of course we have other players who also need to do their job,” he said.

It will be interesting to see how Jose Mourinho sets the side up without Matic and whether the Blues play differently as a result.
