Report: Southampton back in for Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk

The Bhoys defender is reportedly on the Saints' radar once again.

Southampton are back in the hunt for Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk, according to the Daily Mail.

The 23-year-old is said to be valued at £10 million by the Bhoys, with the Scottish Champions reportedly knocking back enquiries from Sunderland and Everton for the Dutchman in January.

Southampton's interest is once again being sparked in the Celtic man because of Manchester City's apparent desire to sign Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgian is currently on loan with the Saints but could join City next season when he returns to parent club Atletico Madrid.

And it is Southampton's reported worry of competing financially with the Premier League champions that is said to be drawing them towards Van Dijk.

Speculation has been rife about Celtic's Dutch defender this season, while he has been praised by the likes of boss Ronny Deila and team-mate Craig Gordon repeatedly.

The Italian media, however, didn't speak too kindly of Van Dijk's display against Inter Milan last Thursday.

For now, the 23-year-old's mind will no doubt be firmly fixed on the Hoops' Europa League second-leg clash with Inter, which takes place in Italy this Thursday - a chance for Van Dijk and co to be written into Celtic folklore.
