“Darren Bent scored yet again for Derby to take them to the top of the Championship,” the 41-year-old wrote in The Daily Mail.
“It was a great result for them to come from behind twice against Sheffield Wednesday to win and with Middlesbrough and Bournemouth losing, the race at the top of the Championship will go right to the wire.
“Derby are my favourites to win it now, but I bet Aston Villa wish Bent was scoring all of these goals for them…”
Can Derby win the Championship?
Derby returned to winning ways in the Championship on Saturday with a 3-2 comeback victory over Sheffield Wednesday at the iPro Stadium.
Steve McClaren’s side are currently two points clear of second-placed Middlesbrough at the top of the standings.
The Rams will be many football followers’ favourites to finish top of the league table at the end of the season, but it will not be easy.
Bournemouth are very much in the running for automatic promotion to the Premier League, while Middlesbrough are Derby’s main challengers for the top spot.
However, Derby have arguably the best squad in the Championship, and if they can stop conceding, then they will almost certainly finish in the top two.
Darren Bent’s heroics
Former Tottenham and Sunderland striker Bent has scored seven goals in eight games for Derby since joining them on loan from Villa in the January transfer window.
The 31-year-old has regained his confidence under manager Steve McClaren and seems to be enjoying his football very much.
Bent struggled to score goals for Premier League strugglers Villa, who are still searching for someone who can step up and find the target regularly.
