Derby County’s George Thorne: We need to build momentum

George Thorne underlines the importance of Derby County building on the victory over Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship on Saturday.

Derby County midfielder George Thorne has told the club’s official website that the team need to build momentum.

The 22-year-old made the comment following the Rams’ 3-2 comeback victory over Sheffield Wednesday at the iPro Stadium in the Championship on Saturday.

It was Derby’s first win in four competitive games and saw them return to the top of the league table, two points clear of Middlesbrough, who are second at the moment.

Thorne, who started the encounter and played for 62 minutes, has now underlined the need to build on the victory over the Owls.

“We took note of the results after the game," the youngster told Derby’s official website. "Everything went for us, but we have been in this position before and so have other teams.

“This will count for nothing if we can’t back it up. We need to build some momentum and we need to back this up on Tuesday and beyond.”

Building momentum

Derby are back in Championship action on Tuesday when they host Charlton Athletic at the iPro Stadium.

The Addicks are currently in the bottom half of the league table, but they have come into some good form recently.

Guy Luzon’s side defeated Wigan Athletic 3-0 away from home on Friday following a 3-0 win against promotion-chasing Brentford at The Valley.

Derby will be favourites to win against Charlton, but they should not get complacent and need to be defensively stronger.

Manager Steve McClaren has arguably the best squad in the Championship at his disposal, but Derby are conceding far too many goals for a team aiming to finish top of the table and gain automatic promotion to the Premier League.
