94.1% pass success, four tackles: Spurs star still effective despite struggles

Tottenham Hotspur’s Ryan Mason had a testing match against West Ham United.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Ryan Mason had an effective performance against West Ham United despite coming up against an opposition midfield on good form.

The Hammers took control of the match as goals from Cheikhou Kouyate and Diafra Sakho gave Sam Allardyce’s men a 2-0 lead with just under 30 minutes remaining.

Spurs did reply through late goals from Danny Rose and Harry Kane, rescuing a point for Mauricio Pochettino’s men and helping their top four hopes.

However, much of the after-match analysis will focus on how the visitors’ midfield trio took control of the match and wrestled momentum away from Spurs duo Mason and Nabil Bentaleb.

Suggestions of tiredness have been mentioned with regards to Mason and the possibility of a long debut Premier League campaign catching up on him. But did the midfielder really struggle on Sunday?

As per the table provided by Opta Stats, the 23-year-old still produced an effective performance at White Hart Lane despite being hooked with 10 minutes remaining as Spurs threw the kitchen sink at it.

From an attacking perspective, Mason contributed with four shots while creating one chance via a key pass to one of his Spurs colleagues.

Defensively, despite struggling to assert himself on the match, he still did a good job in breaking up the play and protecting his defence – recording four tackles and three effective clearances.

One of his fortes is ball retention and supplying the more creative players with regularity. In possession, he didn’t falter and completed 94.1% of his intended passes – more than any other player on the pitch.

It may not have been Mason’s finest game in a Spurs shirt this season, but what will comfort supporters is despite his struggles he still managed to play an effective part and maintain a consistent level.
