One week ago, Stoke City defender Philipp Wollscheid came in for plenty of criticism after his side lost 4-1 to Blackburn Rovers in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
The on-loan defender had impressed up until then, but against the Championship side his lack of pace was exploited to devastating effect and Stoke were left humbled.
But football has a habit of turning pariahs into heroes in a matter of days…sometimes even less than that…and Wollscheid’s performance against Aston Villa on Saturday saw him praised once again.
The German-capped centre-back made 19 effective clearances against Villa, playing a vital role in his side’s 2-1 win.
|Passing Accuracy||Interceptions Won||Duels Won||Aerials Won||Effective Clearances||Effective Headed Clearances||Mins Played|
He also came out on top in 16 battles, eight in the air and eight on the ground, and while his lack of pace remains an issue he has the skills in his locker to compensate for that more often than not.
After the match we took to Twitter to see what Stoke fans thought of Wollschied’s latest performance, a week after we found some less than flattering comments about his FA Cup debut, and you can read a selection of what we discovered below:
Wollscheid man of the match, football eh? Clearly defending deep and leaving no space is his forte— Russell Dutton (@RussellDutton) February 21, 2015
Wollscheid has been REALLY good for Stoke today. Biggest reason that Villa haven't gotten shots off today.— Alex Carson ❄️ (@crashcarson15) February 21, 2015
I'd definitely go sign Wollscheid, solid defensively. Seen snails move quicker though #scfc— Carl J (@StokieCarl) February 21, 2015
Deserved based on that second half, much improved, Wollscheid in particular— Matt Selfridge (@mjselfridge) February 21, 2015
Wollscheid is Beckenbauer again right? ;)— bayernoatcake (@bayernoatcake1) February 21, 2015
