Southampton's pursuit of a Champion League place took a huge hit today as fop four-chasing rivals Liverpool beat them 2-0 at St. Mary's Stadium.
The Saints have been superb at home this season, but it's now three home games without a win for Ronald Koeman's men, with this defeat coming after a draw against West Ham and a loss to Swansea City.
Philippe Coutinho got the ball rolling in the opening minutes for Liverpool, swiveling and smashing a long range driving in off the cross bar, giving Fraser Forster no chance.
The Saints had plenty of chances and plenty of possession, but couldn't haul themselves back into the game, and Raheem Sterling pounced on a slip from youngster Matt Targett to put Liverpool 2-0 up with just 20 minutes to play.
The result leaves Southampton in fifth place, just one point shy of Manchester in fourth and one point clear of Liverpool in sixth.
The game saw three Liverpool player's make their first returns to St. Mary's Stadium since leaving last summer, and whilst Rickie Lambert didn't make it off the bench, Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana both started the game.
The departure of Lallana was the one that hurt the most for Saints fans; with the club from the age of 12, Lallana came up through the ranks and starred in League One, The Championship and the Premier League with the club before moving on to Liverpool last summer.
Supporters still haven't quite come to terms with his exit, and his appearance for Liverpool today was met with a chorus of boos before he was substituted for Daniel Sturridge on 62 minutes.
Fans took to Twitter after the game to discuss Lallana, with many believing that the booing was disrespectful to a player who stuck by the club during dark times, whilst others seemingly missed the England international on a day where Southampton couldn't find a goal.
Here are some of the reactions from Southampton fans to Lallana's return to St. Mary's Stadium...
Lallana looked close to tears leaving the field. Hate the way he went about leaving #saintsfc but still a massive part of our journey. Shame— Fred Irwin (@fredwin) February 22, 2015
I've resented Lallana since he left, but as he returns to SMS I suddenly feel conflicted. Oh Adam, you could've been a legend. #SaintsFC— Josh Reynolds (@ReynoldsJ6) February 22, 2015
Disappointed that Lallana is getting booed. Stuck around during the dark days and led the club to its current position. Top class. #saintsfc— Adam Ferguson (@ConsumedbyFilm) February 22, 2015
Adam Lallana had so many opportunities to leave when we were in administration & League 1 & he didn't. #saintsfc fans should remember that— Joseph Richardson (@Jj147Joseph) February 22, 2015
Lallana has more talent in a few strides than Pelle did the whole match. #onarant— •BETH FOLAN• (@BethFolan) February 22, 2015
