According to a report from Goal.com, Tottenham Hotspur have launched what they call a ‘charm offensive’ to sign the PSV Eindhoven winger, but that Manchester United remain favourites for the player’s signature.
Depay has scored 21 goals in 28 matches this season, and he has a total of 43 goals and 27 assists during his time at PSV.
The 21-year-old is hot property and the latest report claims United are concerned Tottenham could sign the player ahead of them because he would play regularly and potentially follow in the footsteps of the likes of Gareth Bale and Luka Modric in securing a lucrative move to an elite club such as Real Madrid.
When you consider United’s own need for creativity from midfield and Louis van Gaal’s previous experience working with Depay, the notion that he would not be a first-team regular at Old Trafford makes little sense; nor does the suggestion that he would only choose Tottenham as a potential spring-board for a move elsewhere.
The truth is Tottenham are on the up, with an impressive manager, a wonderful squad and with a realistic chance of signing more promising young talent to play alongside the likes of Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane.
If Tottenham really are conducting a charm offensive, the best way to do that may be to keep winning on the pitch, proving to Depay that they are contenders not only for his signature, but also for the trophies he may well aspire to win.
