Rangers fans react on Twitter to ex Leeds defender Marius Zaliukas performance

Rangers Gates

Marius Zaliukas featured as Rangers edged a vital win over Raith Rovers.

A week ago Rangers suffered a frustrating Friday night defeat in the Scottish Championship to Hibernian. Seven days later they were reflecting on a more satisfactory 90 minutes.

The Gers edged a 2-1 win away to Raith Rovers, who had defeated them earlier this month by the same scoreline to knock them out of the Scottish Cup at Ibrox.

Last night they survived a late Raith fightback to hold onto a vital 2-1 lead to move back into second place in the table, with two games on hand on leaders Hearts.

If they can win these they would still be 13 points behind, with automatic promotion a distant dream. However they would in the process move seven points clear of third, giving them substantial breathing room for the vital end of season promotion/relegation play-off.

Rangers went 1-0 up through youngster Andy Murdoch in the first half before 31-year-old Kris Boyd doubled their lead in ther 54th minute with what would amount to being the winning goal.

Ryan Conroy scored for Raith with 20 minutes to go to set up a grandstand finish but Rangers were able to hold on.

In central defence was Lithuanian defender Marius Zaliukas, making only his second league appearance since October. His absence was one which had caused Rangers fan website Ibrox Noise to run an editorial in early February titled 'Where on earth in Marius Zaliukas?'

A former Hearts defender, he had been with English Championship side Leeds United before being released last season. He has now made eight league appearances for Rangers.

His inclusion in the squad again was welcomed on Twitter, but an early error saw him panned...

By the time full-time was up and Rangers had managed to hold onto the win, the negative comments and nerves had turned into positives.

The Gers had only one of their Newcastle United loanees available, Haris Vuckic who started the game.
